Rutherfurd Burton is a hippo clothing store owner from the visual novel GameOver. Formal and regal in bearing, the hippo takes great pride in his shop and the wares he sells, with a focus on always presenting his family and his wares in the highest regard. If you manage to get his personal interest, he takes the initiative to familiarize himself with your body and then hires you on to work at his store. Many misadventures and other incidents ensue between him, the wacky people off the town, and his adopted son, Waffurd. He features two Bad Ends for you to discover.
Backstory
As a member of the Burton Lineage, Rutherfurd is originally from the country's capital and is a part of the grooming and clothing producing family that outfits high level nobles and members of the royal family.[1] He is highly interested in learning new clothing styles and fashions from the player and other members of the town, especially because travelers through the area come from various regions, including nobles from those different nations.[2]
Questlines
The Intimacy Of A Clothier
The clothier is quite happy to meet the acquaintance of a new customer in town and of the already infamous adventurer, explaining his own history and work.[1] He inquires about your own experiences and whether you've seen any interesting clothing styles on your travels that he might glean his own insights from. He hopes you'll inform him if you see anything of the sort in the future.[2] Though initially wary of having any close connection with the player, having other close personal intimate interactions with Garius,[3] Bjorn,[4] and Reynard,[5] along with visiting Rutherfurd while being in a particularly incensed lustful state, he will have by then heard about your reputation and will be interested in taking advantage of it.[6]
After having had a sexual encounter with his prodigious pectorals, Rutherfurd will question you about the experience, noting that he does have occasional dalliances with other people in the town. But they are all rather large in every aspect and so don't fit well with his size, whereas you are perfectly sized for such experiences.[7] A subsequent encounter will have him involve the player more in rough play with his bosom[8] and he will determine afterwards that he is indeed interested in using one of Azlos' potions to allow him to lactate. Though he has his concerns if this sort of play gets out to the public at large, his family might take action against the originators of the information, including the player, to silence it.[9]
Once you have learned this and have been overcome with desire for Rutherfurd,[10] he discusses the difficulty of hiring workers that reflect well upon the House. But he feels like he has some connection with you somehow and can trust you to work with him, informing you that you'll be working alongside his adopted son, Waffurd.[11] Speaking with Waffurd several times about him, his family, and his piercings,[12] Rutherfurd will comment that he's glad you're getting along with him and that he wishes his son would get out and make friends with more people.[13] After you've become intimate with Waffurd in all the different ways, including indulging in his multiple kinks,[14] and spoken to him about the fun you've had[15], Rutherfurd will take notice of just how close you two have become. He thanks you for keeping his son company and returning his happiness to him.[16]
The Workload Of A Clothier
Going through your first time working for Rutherfurd will have him make sure you smell nice and then let you get used to the store area. Nothing much will happen in the regular scene.[17] But if you've experienced a lifetime with Vince,[18] the big fox will arrive to pick up an order and apologize for tracking in dirt.[19] If you've been on a date with Vic,[20] the bird will comment on how it makes sense that you work here, what with you being more of a townie. He'll also take the opportunity to sexually tease you a bit.[21] Speaking with Rutherfurd after your first day of work will have him explain his childhood of helping the maids clean the house to create a good work ethic, which is why he is so particular in whom he hires.[22]
Next time you'll focus more on restocking the shelves, with you noticing just how much work needs to be done in a day at the store and wondering how the pair managed before.[23] If you've been kept permanently in Reynard's room before,[24] the chef will show up to pick out some new clothes after a rough session with Vic. He's happy that there's someone around to help Rutherfurd out now.[25] Also, if you've become mayor Sep's boytoy before,[26] he'll be surprised to find you working in the shop, since the hippo usually keeps those that are sexually involved with him at a distance.[27] Afterwards, Rutherfurd will confide in you that his son has become a lot more reclusive ever since they moved from the castle and less willing to showcase his craftsmanship work in the shop. The attention and support he's been giving to his son has cut into Rutherfurd's time spent on his own tailoring and personal work, but he wants to eventually pass on things to Waffurd as the hippo is getting on in years.[28]
Your third work stint will have you clean the dressing rooms and you find it takes quite a lot of time to return all the clothes to their rightful places.[29] If you've already been to the shop before with Vandeel and had him comment on wanting to mess around with you in the dressing rooms,[30] who will appear but the dwarf himself. And he left you a present for you to decide how best to clean up.[31] Lastly, if you've had a permanent home with Bjorn while he's over at the construction site,[32] he'll be at the shop looking for some new underwear. And he will physically accost you in the dressing rooms, but leave before any real fun could be had.[33] Grateful for your assistance, Rutherfurd comments on how inappropriate people seem to get even in public places, though admits to his own dalliances.[34]
After each period of work, you can suggest to Rutherfurd that the two of you have some fun. Your first option will have you refamiliarize yourself with his pectorals[35] and he'll comment on how forceful you've become.[36] Otherwise you can take your drink from a lower location[37] and he'll note how rare it is for anyone in the town to take care of him instead o the usual other way around.[38] Be careful you don't run out of stamina while working though or the hippo will make you his constant nighttime companion while you work at his shop forevermore.[39]
The Pride Of A Clothier
Once you've completed all of your work periods and also gone through the unfortunate squashing of Waffurd by Burchill's behind,[40] Rutherfurd's son will ask his dad if he can take up some front desk time at the shop and free up some time for his dad to work on new clothing designs.[41] Rutherfurd's enthusiasm for his son's own newfound interest is not to be underestimated and you'll find in your next conversation that the hippo has written up a massive amount of pages, practically a book, on how to run the shop and account for every contingency. And this is the stack that he trimmed down to for brevity. He asks for you to deliver the papers to Waffurd to act as a guide, but not something he needs to rigorously study or anything.[42]
After your first shift with Waffurd,[43] Rutherfurd will thank you and talk about how proud he is of his son and how he knows the boy will do well.[44] Though after your second shift,[45] Rutherfurd will be sad that he didn't think about the heavy boxes and how disorganized they had been. He hopes to be a better father and find a way around these problems.[46]Then on the flip side to this after your third shift,[47] Rutherfurd will be quite happy at how well Waffurd did in managing the store. He plans to have a talk between them over dinner on if his son has any suggestions on changing the store layout to appeal to customers.[48]
Once you've managed to work with both Burchill and Waffurd enough to get the rat to convince the tiger to be an employee at the clothing store,[49] Rutherfurd will discuss you being a proper hero and also helping his son advance and make new friends. Apparently Nel has been talking, though your claimed accomplishments still have Rutherfurd wanting to keep any involvement with each other private. He wants you to be his clothing model for his new creations. You agree, though also wonder if you have some real accomplishments you could tell Nel to give you a boost in public standing.[50]
