Questlines
Finding A Warm Chest
Only appearing at the Barracks in a blast of cold after getting Ran's approval to patrol with the guards[1] and having come under personal control of Azkim,[2] you'll quite literally bump into Kubas and be introduced by Iron. While technically not an official guard, the dragon adventurer is acting as a trainer at the Barracks, particularly in drawing out people's latent abilities. He senses Azkim's mark on you and is intrigued as much as the others are on what you can do, suggesting you let him get personal to find out.[3] As with so many others, he begins questioning you on how you got through the northern forest and the spell of illusion on it and you inform him that you saw no mist and had no problem walking right through, making him wonder how you were so lucky.[4]
The next inquiry has Kubas badgering you about your special abilities and he determines, despite you not really wanting to answer him, that you know nothing about what you can do at all. He surmises that the power can feel must have been sealed away by someone and that's how you got through the forest so easily. Azkim, meanwhile, has been talking about you and noting how much of an eye for detail and things being wrong you have, which Kubas would like to see for himself. He tasks you with investigating the whereabouts and any other information you can find about the mysterious stranger who came the same night you did and brought the mist with him. According to Geve, the guy is a canine as well.[5]
Showing Off Your Skills
Before you properly begin an investigation, Kubas is going to give you a test. Taking you into the main building of the Barracks, you notice that no one guard has the same sort of armor setup at the others, with Kubas wearing practically nothing, and the only point of congruence between them all being a metal harness. Kubas explains that the harness is the only official piece of armor, as it is magically enchanted for protection and serves them just as well as full plate would. Any other additions to their outfit are purely cosmetic and by choice of the individual.[6] Reaching the area where all the gear is stored, an area you might remember if you messed around with Vandeel here,[7] you notice that it is all in perfect working order with no damage or scarring at all. Kubas explains that Ran requires everyone's armor to be in order and to be properly maintained, including taking it periodically to the local blacksmith as needed. He decides you're good enough at the job and will be spearheading the investigation using your own connections to the town residents.[6]
You begin your preliminary investigations into the town while patrolling as a guard, Kubas showing up not long after.[8] To get any farther in this investigation, you must already know about nagas from both Harold[9] and from Shlar.[10] Thus, you are able to identify strange tracks on the ground having come from the long sinuous bodies of nagas and you explain the possible connection between them and the stranger to Kubas. And you explain what you learned from Harold that they only telepathically speak to whom they want and trying to capture one of them for interrogation is a bad idea. Following the tracks to the edge of town, a homeowner there who says he hasn't seen any nagas, meaning they must have come through recently before the owner returned from the market. Kubas goes to update Ran on what you've discovered.[11]
Going On A Hot Date
During your subsequent investigation, interaction with Kubas is only possible if the musk kink is unlocked. If you then additionally have a lust of just less than half or more, when you run into the dragon's chest for another time, he has you stay there a while.[12] An additional different scene is available upon another playthrough.[13] To be trusted to be further involved in the other investigations that Kubas is pursuing, you must be closer to him personally. This involves taking him on a date. To do so, foraging must have been unlocked from Reynard[14] and the ingredient collected and recipe made for Pottater Chicken With Banana Dipping Sauce before beginning the date with Kubas from your inn room. Trying to find him at the Barracks, you inevitable run into his chest again and offer him the food. Not the type of person to share, he decides to feed you a different meal and from both ends. Predictably, the rough handling results in you losing consciousness by the end.[15]
When next you encounter Kubas, you question about why your personal time with him resulted in his body being so exceptionally warm. He explains that, as a mage, his body has become more aligned with fire due to the focus of his abilities, which has biologically altered him. But it also allows him to loosen up his partners, which he also helped along by giving you his seal. If you have the mpreg trait, he comments that if you do end up having his children, he might have to settle down with you as his wife and perhaps even steal you back to his homeland. Based on what he said, size in both body and assets relates to rank in the dragon clan, making you wonder just how big their clan leader is.[16] Now that he feels closer to you, he suggests you join him on his personal investigation. Kubas has noticed at night that it sometimes becomes much darker than it should before suddenly clearing up, as if a large unseen shadow was being cast. After checking it out, he found that this event only happens inside the town and stepping outside the gates during the occurrence shows no darkness at all. He suspects some sort of spell being cast and wants your help to find out who's responsible.[17]
Looking For A Fiend
Starting the special investigation, Kubas explains that the darkness first started happening after Harold came to the town, though he doesn't think the mage is involved and knows already what his research is on. But the dragon does know that some form of dark magic is responsible and suggests you ask around about it because the locals are more likely to speak with you than a large enforcer like him.[18] Hanging out with him in the meantime, Kubas tells you about his prior relationships and how he did let others top him before, but only if they're smaller than him in both aspects. And that the females of his race, though kept separate from the males, have much the same dominant personalities.[19] To get any further in your investigation into weird magic going on, you must have been around to notice Vandeel's strange growth, spoken about it with Vince,[20] and brought it up to Vic.[21] You can bring up these changes to Kubas and he will bring you to confront the dwarf. Kubas agrees that changes had happened, but knows stubborn old dwarves won't openly tell him anything, so he suggests you work at the blacksmith for the day while he keeps tabs on a stranger Vandeel was staring at.[22]
His further searches have revealed to Kubas that there's another fiend in town outside of the known ones like Varok and Jar. He decides he'll question Jar about what he knows on this, while leaving Varok to you.[23] Hanging out with Kubas before doing so will have him tell you how he's getting along with probing Jar. Considering how advanced his lecherous skills are, Kubas determines that he's older than he seems and has a lot of experience of getting people to give in to him.[24] Bringing up the potential extra fiend to Varok, he will confirm there is one, but that they aren't from his clan. Instead, they are a mage that became too involved in the dark arts and transformed fully into a demon, though they are using magic to pretend to still be normal. He warns you not to confront the culprit directly or they might try to remove you as an obstacle.[25] You try to tell Kubas about this, but he says you should speak more privately so no one overhears.[26]
Staking Out A Mage
Agreeing with Varok's information, Kubas is concerned about such a demonic mage being here and what that means. Having such a person still be openly walking around in a town that has a number of other nobles and important people is worrisome, as it could result in the town becoming a haven for their and other maligned types in general. This could in turn cause a crackdown by the order of knights and a massive restriction of the law and order in the town. Since it's impressive that the Baroness managed to get approval for demons to serve as guards in the first place. And any fiends beyond those under direct control of the mayor puts all of that at risk. He determines that the darkness might have been when the unknown demonic mage was summoning more demons, as that rite causes a general pall of darkness to fall. Jar meanwhile suggested to Kubas that he walk around the part of the Barracks where the new jail cells are being built, suggesting that the mage who walks openly might be able to be found around there.[27]
That evening, Kubas sets up his waiting spot just out of site of the construction area of the Barracks and set things up so he can detect any temperature differences and so if anyone arrives who shouldn't be there. While you two are staking the place out, he decides to have some fun with you.[28]
