This template is used in MediaWiki:Histlegend, and on approximately 837,000 pages, or roughly 58409% of all pages. Changes to it can cause immediate changes to the Wikipedia user interface. To avoid major disruption and server load, any changes should be tested in the template's /sandbox or /testcases subpages, or in your own user subpage. The tested changes can be added to this page in a single edit. Please discuss changes on the talk page before implementing them. |
Notice | This template should not be used in citation templates such as Citation Style 1 and Citation Style 2, because it includes markup that will pollute the COinS metadata they produce; see Wikipedia:COinS. |
{{Nowrap}}
or {{nowrap}}
stops wrapping of specific text (which can be inside of a link). Use this template sparingly. It prevents word wraps (line breaks) that might otherwise happen at spaces, hyphens ("-"), or, in some browsers, parentheses. The size of the nowrapped text becomes the minimum width of that paragraph and that can negatively influence the ability of the page to adapt to smaller screens, or alternate representations of the content.
To achieve the opposite effect of {{nowrap}}
, you can use {{wbr}}
. For more information about wrapping and breaking sentences, see Wikipedia:Line-break handling.

Controlling line-breaking in infoboxes
This template may be used with {{Wbr}}
and {{Spaces}}
to control line-breaking in bulletless lists in infoboxes, to prevent wrapped long entries from being confused with multiple entries. See Template:Wbr/doc#Controlling line-breaking in infoboxes for details.
Handling equal-sign or bar
Templates have problems with parameter data that contains equal-signs "=
" or vertical bars "|
" (pipes). Note that this does not apply if the equal-sign "=
" or vertical bar "|
" is inside a wikilink or another template. In the case that there is a bare equal-sign "=
" or vertical bar "|
", consider using {{Nowrap begin}} + {{Nowrap end}} instead. However, there are also other workarounds:
For text that includes an equal-sign "=", precede the text with 1=
, use a triple-brace unnamed parameter {{{|=}}}
, or the {{=}}
template. For example:
{{Nowrap|1=2 + 2 = 4}}
,{{Nowrap|2 + 2 {{{|=}}} 4}}
, or{{Nowrap|2 + 2 {{=}} 4}}
which all render as this:
- 2 + 2 = 4.
For text that includes a vertical bar "|", escape the bar(s) with "|
" or "{{pipe}}
" or "{{abs}}
". For instance, put two bars "|6|" like this:
{{Nowrap||6| < 7}}
or{{Nowrap|{{pipe}}6{{pipe}} < 7}}
or{{Nowrap|{{abs|6}} < 7}}
Which renders this:
- |6| < 7
Technical details
The actual code that does the job is this HTML <span>
tag that applies a class to the text inside the template:
This template is used on 837,000+ pages, or roughly 58409% of all pages. To avoid major disruption and server load, any changes should be tested in the template's /sandbox or /testcases subpages, or in your own user subpage. Usage
Wraps a short span of text in <syntaxhighlight>
tags (see mw:Extension:SyntaxHighlight). This template should be used for short samples; longer content should use <pre>...</pre>
or <syntaxhighlight>...</syntaxhighlight>
. See Help:Wiki markup for an explanation of what the various tags do.
If the content includes an equals sign (=), you must specify the parameter explicitly: {{code|1=date=30 Feb 2010}}
.
The template uses the <syntaxhighlight>
tag with the attribute inline=1
. This works like the combination of the <code>
and <nowiki>
tags, applied to the expanded wikitext. For example, {{code|some '''wiki''' text}}
will not render the word "wiki" in bold, and will render the tripled-single-quotes:
- Template loop detected: Template:Code
However, {{code|a {{template}} call}}
will still invoke the template:
- Template loop detected: Template:Code
Use <nowiki>...</nowiki>
around the template name to avoid this problem:
- Template loop detected: Template:Code
When used inline with regular text, {{code}}
generally looks best and is easiest to read when it is explicitly spaced apart from the regular text:
- Template loop detected: Template:Code
is well spaced:
- foo Template loop detected: Template:Code quux.
versus:
- Template loop detected: Template:Code
which is going to be visually confusing for many:
- foo Template loop detected: Template:Code quux.
because "foo" and "Template loop detected: Template:Code" will seem more closely associated than "Template loop detected: Template:Code" and "Template loop detected: Template:Code"; the width of the space character in a monospaced font is almost always larger than in a proportional font.
Use parameter {{{2}}} (unnamed, as |2=
, or more explicitly as |lang=
) to specify a language for mw:Extension:SyntaxHighlight. This option defaults to plain-text, i.e. no highlighting. There is no highlighting option for wikitext as a markup language, though Template loop detected: Template:Code and Template loop detected: Template:Code are valid values, as are Template loop detected: Template:Code, Template loop detected: Template:Code, Template loop detected: Template:Code, Template loop detected: Template:Code, Template loop detected: Template:Code and many others. Attempting to use an invalid one causes a list of valid ones to be displayed in place of the template output, when the page is previewed or saved.
This template does not need to be substituted.
